School of Social Work
In the Spring of 1999, Latino/a Social Work Alumni were invited by The USC School of Social Work to address the issues and concerns surrounding the greater Latino communities in Southern California. The Latino Alumni Community Advisory Committee (LACAC) was created to advise school leadership on issues pertaining to Latino’s within the school’s curriculum, its students, and faculty. LACAC also served and united Latino alumni for the purpose of advancing the interests of The University through the establishment of an Endowed Chair. Over the course of its existence, LACAC raised funds for the Margarita Mendez/Juan Ramos Endowed Fund through corporate contributions, fundraising activities as well as individual gifts and membership donations. This collective effort enabled the continued journey towards the improvement of service delivery practices in the Latino community. LACAC is now known as The Latino Alumni Advisory Board and now supports and mentors Latino students currently attending the USC Suzanne Dworak Peck School of Social Work. The Latino Alumni Advisory Board sponsors alumni networking activities, fundraising programs, and participates in a variety of events at the USC Suzanne Dworak Peck School of Social Work.
“To enhance and support the quality of social work education at the USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work and prepare Latino students for the profession through advocacy, fundraising, education, curriculum development and community service.”
“To promote the professional skills and cultural competency of Latino students in social work practice and engage the USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work in Latino issues.”
The Latino Alumni Advisory Board has developed a list of resources to support social workers in continuing their education and growth during this period of social distancing. This guide is meant to help you reflect on your professional — and personal — role in the fight for a more equal and just society.
The Latino Alumni Advisory Board would like to acknowledge and give a special thanks to faculty at The USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work for their invaluable guidance and support of this project. The Board would also like to thank members of the California Social Work Archive (CSWA) for their support.
We will continue to update this guide and we welcome any suggestions, critiques or other comments.
